Strategic Cold Storage Revitalisation for Linden Foods

Introduction

Toddsleap Racking & Shelving was presented with a significant challenge by Linden Foods, a longstanding client since the early 1990s. The task was to devise a storage solution for two of their freezers and Chills that contained old and extensively damaged racking systems. With a substantial portion of the racking beyond repair and some models discontinued, a comprehensive and cost-effective solution was required. This case study explores the innovative approach Toddsleap took to revitalise Linden Foods' freezer storage capabilities, highlighting the project’s execution, challenges, and outcomes.

Client Background

Linden Foods is a prominent name in the food processing industry, known for its commitment to quality and sustainability. As a client with a relationship dating back over three decades, Linden Foods has consistently relied on Toddsleap Racking & Shelving for storage solutions that meet their evolving needs. This project aimed not only to address immediate storage challenges but also to enhance operational efficiency and compliance with stringent industry standards.

The Challenge

Upon inspection, it was found that approximately only 30% of the pallet racking was in a usable condition, severely limiting storage capacity and efficiency in Linden Foods' freezers. The damaged and outdated racking posed significant operational challenges, affecting inventory management and complicating compliance with the British Retail Consortium (BRC) audit requirements.

Solutions Implemented

Toddsleap Racking & Shelving evaluated various options, including repairing the existing racking, cannibalising some sections to repair others, and considering both new and used racking solutions. The chosen strategy involved:

  • Repairing One Chiller: Utilising existing good materials, one of the freezers was repaired to enhance its storage capacity and safety. This allowed for immediate improvement in operational capacity.

  • Utilising Used Racking for the Second Freezer: For the other freezer, a cost-effective solution involving used racking was implemented. This approach provided an economical yet fully functional system, aligning with Linden Foods' budgetary constraints and sustainability goals.

  • Drive-In System Integration: The project included the integration of a drive-in system, chosen for its compatibility with readily available components from Toddsleap's stock and the manufacturer. This system further optimised storage capacity and efficiency.

Outcome

The project was completed within a two-week timeframe, with the Toddsleap team working diligently on-site to ensure minimal disruption to Linden Foods' operations. The interventions allowed Linden Foods to restore 100% capacity in their freezers, significantly enhancing their storage capabilities. Additionally, the upgraded and repaired racking systems played a crucial role in Linden Foods passing their most recent BRC Audit with commendable results.

  • Increased Capacity and Efficiency: The repairs and replacement of damaged racking increased usable storage space by 10%, allowing for better inventory management and operational flow.

  • Compliance and Safety: The improvements contributed to a safer work environment and ensured compliance with industry standards, facilitating a successful BRC Audit.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: By opting for a combination of repairs and used racking solutions, Linden Foods achieved their objectives within budget, without compromising on quality or safety.

Conclusion

The freezer storage project for Linden Foods exemplifies Toddsleap Racking & Shelving's commitment to delivering tailored, efficient, and cost-effective storage solutions. By addressing complex challenges with innovative approaches, Toddsleap helped Linden Foods enhance their operational efficiency, ensure safety and compliance, and achieve significant improvements in storage capacity. This project reaffirms Toddsleap Racking & Shelving's status as a trusted partner in the industry, capable of meeting and exceeding the expectations of long-standing clients like Linden Foods.
